How Air Curtains Improve Energy Efficiency and Air Quality

Air curtains can assist with energy efficiency improvements and improve air quality in various settings for commercial and industrial applications.

Benefits of air curtains

Enhance air conditioning system performance

  • Air curtains separate indoor and outdoor areas using a barrier of air. They help maintain a comfortable temperature by preventing heat or cooling from escaping through open doors.
  • Air curtains assist in improving the performance of air conditioning systems by maintaining a constant temperature and minimising the loss of cooling or heating. As a result, they can reduce the air conditioning load of systems, leading to potential efficiency gains.

Increase comfort for occupants

  • Air curtains create a comfortable indoor environment by preventing drafts near entrances and reducing temperature fluctuations.

Improve indoor air quality

  • Air curtains act as a barrier against outdoor pollutants, such as dust, pollen, and exhaust fumes.
  • By preventing the entry of these pollutants, air curtains help maintain a healthier indoor environment and improve indoor air quality.
  • Insect shut-out
  • Commercial air curtains provide an invisible barrier of air to keep insects out of your premises. Selecting the right air curtain for a restaurant, for example, allows doors to be left open while keeping out flies and other bugs.
  • The air flow of the unit determines the effectiveness of insect shut-out. Larger insects require stronger air volumes.

Types of Air Curtains

Mitsubishi Electric supplies two types of air curtains: Residential & Light Commercial use and Industrial & Light Commercial use models.

Air Curtains – Residential & Light

  • Top inlet type – 100 mm space required between unit and ceiling for air intake.
  • 336 l/s to 483 l/s air quantity
  • 900 mm and 1194 mm width models
  • Quieter operation suitable for residential and business use.

Industrial & Light Commercial Usage

  • Front inlet – can be fitted close to the ceiling. No extra space is required. Opens up more options for installation where there is no space available above.
  • 650 – 867 l/s air quantity
  • 900 mm and 1180 mm width models
  • Suited to applications where there is a greater difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures.
  • Better suited to applications where the outdoor wind is strong.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Air curtains work by utilizing a series of fans to blow air either downwards or horizontally. This creates an airflow volume and velocity that forms an invisible barrier between the outside air and the inside air.

Air curtains are typically installed above doors that are open to the outside air, which can lead to temperature control issues. The invisible airstream barrier they create helps prevent the loss of cool air during cooling and heat loss during heating, thus maintaining temperature control and reducing the load on the air conditioning system. Additionally, air curtains contribute to a hygienic environment by keeping insects from entering the premises.

Air curtains can assist with preventing loss of cool air during cooling and heat loss during heating which helps to reduce load on the air conditioning system.

Air curtains, such as the Mitsubishi Electric GK-25/30 Series Air Curtain, feature strong airflow volume and velocity that can effectively prevent the entry of flies and other insects into a premises. This makes them especially beneficial for food service areas like cafes and restaurants where keeping bugs out is crucial.

Top inlet type air curtain models to suit residential and light commercial applications. Airflow rates range from 336 l/s to 483 l/s.

Front inlet type air curtains are used in commercial and industrial applications as they feature stronger airflow rates of 650 l/s to 867 l/s which make them an ideal choice in food production sites and in areas where temperature control and hygiene is critical.

Mitsubishi Electric air curtains are available in 900 mm and 1180 mm widths models.
