Air purifiers can filter odours, particulate matter and dust from the air. However, effective air purification depends on the type, grade, and the number of filters.
An air purifier with an Activated Carbon Filter and Platinum Catalyst Filter can remove chemical pollutants, TVOCs (Total Volatile Organic Compounds) smoke, road pollution and unpleasant odours.
The main component of high-quality air purifier is a HEPA filter. A HEPA filter rated to filter ultra-fine particles (as small as 0.3μm), such as PM2.5, pollen and dust mites.
Look for specifications that indicate the testing standard used.
A good air purifier has multiple filters and a high-grade HEPA filter. The HEPA filter should be able to remove ultra-fine particles in the air, such as PM2.5, and filter pollen and dust mites.
Extra filters such as an Activated Carbon Filter and Platinum Catalyst filter should be able to remove chemical pollutants, smoke and unpleasant odours.
High performance air purifiers feature a high Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR), an industry measure to indicate the volume of filtered air delivered by an air cleaner. It is measured in cubic metres per hour (or cubic feet per second). Higher CADR values are better.
To learn more about these features and more, read our blog post Top features to look for when buying an air purifier.
An air purifier removes airborne dust, particles and odours from the air. The effectiveness of air purification depends on the types and grade of filters in the unit and on the airflow rate and directions.
Air purifiers draw air from within a room and passes it through a series of filters before expelling the clean air back into the room. Different types of filters help remove different airborne pollutants such as dust, hair, pollen, mould spores, pet dander, smoke, odour, fine particles, ultra-fine particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

HEPA filter air purifiers are not generally designed to purify the indoor air of an entire house. For the best air treatment results, air purifiers should be used on a room-by-room basis𑁋placed in the areas where you spend most of your time.
Generally, air purifier filters will need to be regularly cleaned to maintain optimal performance and replaced in accordance with the operating environment and conditions of use.
It is recommended that the HEPA Filter and the Activated Carbon Filter in the Mitsubishi Electric E85R Air Purifier be replaced when:
Full instructions for cleaning and replacing the air purifier filters can be found in the user manual.
A Dehumidifier is designed to remove excess moisture from the air and maintain a comfortable level of humidity level in your home. It can also help to remove musty odours and assist with preventing the formation of mould and mildew. In comparison, an Air Purifier helps to clean the air in a room and improve indoor air quality by reducing common airborne allergens and pollutants.
Read more in our blog about the differences between an air purifier and a dehumidifier.
There are a couple of features to look for in an air purifier if you are looking for relief from allergies triggered by airborne particles including pollen. Our blog post: Spring Relief: 6 Surprising Ways an Air Purifier Can Ease Your Hay Fever Blues covers the key features you should consider when buying an air purifier.
Air purifiers are worth considering for the benefits of reducing airborne allergens and pollutants in the home. Air purifiers equipped with HEPA H13 and Carbon Filters usually can capture and remove up to 99.97% airborne pollutants from the indoor air.
An air purifier is a device that helps to reduce common airborne allergens and pollutants in a room to improve indoor air quality.
Indoor air quality is important because we spend so much of our time inside our homes breathing the air. It’s easy to presume that pollution is only an issue outside, but the same air contains traces of vehicle exhaust, airborne dust, pollen, smoke, and other pollutants that can enter our homes. Household dust, cigarette smoke, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from paint and foam inside lounges and mattresses, as well as pet hair and dander, are all common pollutants already in the home.
When indoors, pollutants are less likely to be blown away and can build up over time. All of these pollutants can potentially irritate your respiratory system, eyes, and skin.
The main reasons for owning an Air Purifier:
Air purifiers equipped with HEPA H13 and Carbon Filters usually can capture and remove up to 99.97% airborne pollutants from the indoor air, as small as 0.3 µm:
HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. Generally, HEPA filters can capture ultra-fine particles (such as pollen, PM2.5, and allergens) in the indoor air, some of which are as small as 0.3 micrometers (μm) in size.
PM2.5 is a technical term for fine particles like dust, measuring 2.5 μm in diameter or less. The installed PM2.5 optical sensor in the Mitsubishi Electric Air Purifier can detect particles measuring as little as 0.5 µm. The light monitors indicate the levels of indoor contamination separately for ’PM2.5’ and ’Dust’, according to the size of the particles.
The Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) is an industry measure to indicate the volume of filtered air delivered by an air cleaner. It is measured in cubic metres per hour (or cubic feet per second). The higher the value, the greater the volume of filtered air produced.
The CADR test is performed in a small room (about 3.4 m per side and 2.4 m high), with the Air Purifier in the centre and set to its highest speed setting. It’s a 20 minute test for each of the three pollutants; dust, tobacco smoke and pollen.
The Mitsubishi Electric E85R Air Purifier has a CADR rate of 508 m3/h.
An air purifier can help to reduce common airborne allergens and pollutants in a room to improve indoor air quality.
A dehumidifier can help to remove excess moisture from the air and helps to maintain a comfortable humidity level in your home.
The Mitsubishi Electric E85R Air Purifier can help to improve your indoor air quality. This Air Purifier features the following (a) 4 stage filtration including an Auto Cleaning Pre-Filter collecting dust; T(b) HEPA Filter catching up to 99.97% particles up to 0.3μm; (c) Activated Carbon Filter can help remove chemical pollutants, TVOCs (Total Volatile Organic Compounds) such as Formaldehyde, Ammonia, Benzene, smoke, road pollution and unpleasant odours; and (d) a Platinum Catalyst Filter capable of absorbing Formaldehyde, cigarette odour and deodorising the air.

The Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) is an industry measure that determines the effectiveness of an air purifier. The CADR is a calculation of the air purifier’s maximum airflow (how much it can handle) multiplied by its efficiency (how much does it capture). The higher the value, the greater the volume of filtered air produced.
We recommend a maximum room size of up to 60m2 based on the CADR.
Your specific situation determines the best place for your Air Purifier. However, because people spend most of their time in the bedroom, this is an ideal location for your air purifier. Allergens in the bedroom can also have an impact on the quality of your sleeping environment. The living room is also a good choice because you spend a lot of time there.
For best results, position your air purifier in the centre of the room or against a wall. Please observe the suggested minimum spacing requirement around the unit so that it can work effectively and allow for better air circulation.
The Mitsubishi Electric E85R Air Purifier has five operation noise levels, depending on the mode you are using; Silent, Low, Middle, High and Turbo. For example, with the sound of rustling leaves measuring at 20dBA, the air purifier’s Silent Night mode operates very quietly at reduced air volumes of 22dBA*1, helping to maintain a calm and comfortable environment.

Yes. Allergens in the bedroom can have an impact on your sleeping environment. The Silent Night mode is the ideal setting, the device lights are dimmed and the unit operates very quietly at reduced air volumes.
Check the 3-step clean light monitor for smell, PM2.5, and dust before going to bed. If they’re still orange or red, keep the air purifier on and switch it off when all the lights are green or when you wake up.
Even if you aren’t allergic to animals, pets can bring in allergens from the outside world. Strong allergens are also in pet saliva, urine, and dander.
An air purifier helps to remove pet dander*1 and unpleasant odour*2.
*1 A large two-layer HEPA Filter catches up to 99.97% ultra-fine particles in the air, as small as 0.3μm* and helps to remove pet dander but doesn’t specifically reduce odours. *Tested in accordance with JIS B 9908:2011.
*2 A 500g Activated Carbon Filter and a Platinum Catalyst Filter helps to absorb cat and dog unpleasant odours.
The Pre-Filter rotates and collects dust into a compartment, keeping the filter cleaner for better performance. The Auto Cleaning Pre-Filter will turn on automatically after approximately 24 hours of use on ’Turbo’ or 120 hours on ’Silent’ manual modes. The Cleaning mechanism will perform for around 2 minutes 40 seconds (i.e. after two slow rotations of the Pre-Filter).
The Auto Cleaning Pre-Filter, HEPA Filter, Activated Carbon Filter and Platinum Catalyst Filter need to be vacuumed regularly with a vacuum cleaner brush attachment.
The Pre-Filter, Activated Carbon Filter and Platinum Catalyst Filter can also be washed with water as needed. Many other Carbon Filters on the market cannot be washed.
When you clean the unit and filters, always wear a mask and gloves, and wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning.
Our HEPA Filter and Activated Carbon Filter are designed for long-lasting performance and durability. The ‘Replace Filter’ light will turn on after approximately 1.6 years up to 8 years, depending on the operating environment and usage. When the unit is used mainly on ‘Normal’ mode, the filters can last up to 5 years.
Once you replace the filters with new ones, press the ‘Reset’ button for approximately 3 seconds until you hear the “blip, blip, blip“ sounds. The ‘Replace Filter’ light turns off, and your Air Purifier is ready to operate again.
Energy Consumption (kWh/day) ≈ Power Consumption (W) × Number of usage hours (h/day) / 1000(W/kW).
For example, if users turn on the air purifier for 1 hour on maximum speed for the day, the energy consumption ≈ 0.086 kWh/day.
