4.1 Are Diamond Voice 56K modems upgradeable to the ITU-T V.90 standard?

Yes. The ITU-T V.90 standard was ratified in September, 1998. Click here to go to the V.90 Download page.

4.2 What is the V.90 standard?

This is the international standard for the "format" or protocol of 56 kbps modem technology, ratified by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU-T). Before V.90, there were two incompatible types of 56k-modem technology, Rockwell's K56flex and US Robotics' X2 proprietary standards, that could not talk to each other. V.90 is intended to replace these two standards.

Note that not all Internet Service Providers support V.90 as yet. To obtain the free V.90 upgrade, please click here to go to the Diamond Voice V.90 download page.

4.3 Why does my 56k modem consistently connect at only 33600?

If at your site, you can NEVER connect above 33.6k, consider whether one or more of the following apply to your situation:

  1. Your ISP's equipment supports a different technology to your modem. For example your ISP may support the X2 technology but not the K56flex (our product uses K56flex). If your ISP supports V.90, you may need to upgrade your modem please click here to go to the Diamond Voice V.90 download page and obtain the free upgrade software.

  2. More than one digital-to-analogue conversion may exist between your modem and your ISP (check with Telstra for this information).

  3. Your site may be too far away from the local exchange ( >6km).

  4. Your modem may be defaulting to select mu-law encoding, instead of A-law (if you use the INF file we supplied and have never upgraded your modem firmware, the modem will default to A-law). Open up a terminal window such as Bitcom and type in these two commands to check that your firmware version is correct:

AT&F - return to default settings

AT+MS? - this should return 56,1,300,56000,1,0,33600

(The 5th field is 1 - meaning default to A-law)

4.4 When will Mitsubishi be offering the upgrade to the new v.90 56k standard for Diamond Voice modems?

The free V.90 upgrade for Diamond Voice modems is available now. Go to the Diamond Voice V.90 download page.

4.5 Do any of the Diamond Voice Modems support V.92 operation, and if not are there any firmware updates available to enable V.92?

Currently none of our modems support V.92 or are upgradeable to enable V.92 operation.
