1.1 How can I set up my Ad-Hoc network to share a dial up Internet connection?
A. Once you have set up your Ad-Hoc network, do the following:
(NOTE: This can only be done under Windows 2000 and XP)
Boot up the computer with the modem attached, then go to the Control Panel.
Double click on Internet Options in the Control Panel window.
Click on the Connections tab at the top of the window
In the Dial-up and Virtual Private Network Settings section, highlight your dial-up profile and click on Settings….
Click on the Properties button in the window that appears.
Click on the Advanced tab at the top of the window that appears.
For Windows XP
Check the box next to “Allow other network users to connect through this computer Internet connection”, then under Home Networking Connection, choose Wireless Network Connection.
Check the box next to “Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet”.
Click OK, OK and OK again. Your Ad-Hoc network is now set up to share a dial-up Internet connection
For Windows 2000
Check the box next to “Internet Connection Sharing for this connection”.
Check the box next to “Enable on-demand dialling” .
Click OK, OK and OK again. Your Ad-Hoc network is now set up to share a dial-up Internet connection.
1.2 I have a Windows XP system with a dial up modem, and I want to be able to share this dial up Internet connection wirelessly with a computer running Windows 98/ME. How can I do this?
A. Once you have set up your Ad-Hoc network, do the following:
On the Windows XP system, double-click the My Network Places icon on the desktop.
On the left hand side of the window, select “Set up a home or small office network”.
The Network Setup Wizard window will appear – click Next, then click Next again.
In the next window, tick the box, “Ignore disconnected network hardware” and click Next.
In the next window, select “This computer connects directly to the Internet. The other computers on my network connect to the Internet through this computer” and click Next.
Select your dial up profile from the list shown in the window and click Next.
In this window, select “Let me choose the connections to my network” and click Next.
Tick the box next to your Wireless Network Connection and click Next.
Enter your Computer Description and Name, then click Next.
Enter the Workgroup Name (MSHOME by default) and click Next.
Click Next at the window showing your selections.
Choose “Create a Network Setup Disk” and click Next.
Insert a blank floppy disk and click Next.
Once the floppy disk has been created, click Next then Finish.
Insert the floppy disk you created into the Windows 98/ME system, open the disk, then run the NETSETUP.EXE program.
When the Network Setup Wizard window appears, click Yes.
The network setting will be loaded. Click OK, then Yes – the computer will restart. Be sure to eject the floppy disk.
The wireless network should now be set up. If you run Internet Explorer on the windows 98/ME system, the XP system with the modem should dial out and allow you to connect.
